A number of years ago Rav Aaron Lichtenstein shlita said that the language of Nachem that we read on Tisha b' Av should be amended and some the references to the city being empty and desolate should be removed because these facts are simply untrue and we do not state untruths in tephila (on a side note I noticed that these lines were left in the new Koren siddur and I would be interested to speak to Rabbi Sacks regarding that, I might e-mail him). One of the lines Ha'avela mibli baneha, gieves for the loss of her children was one of the lines that was taken out because he said the city is now full of Jews.
There are some in the charedi community who seem to not have a problem with the city being mibli baneha if they can't control which "banim and banot" are allowed in. It is being reported that violence is once again paying off for some of these fools who violently protested against the opening of a parking lot on Shabbos in Yerushalayim. The mayor attempted a compromise to have non-Jews work in the lot over shabbos, thereby eliminating any chillul shabbos by the municipality but that was not good enough for these violent thugs. It is being reported that Mayor Barkat has agreed to close a parking lot that these thugs were protesting about. Leading these protests, Yoelish Kraus, a rabbid anti zionist from the eida hacharedis went so far as to say "If they want war, there will be war" this behema should be put in handcuffs and deported to Iran so he can spend time with people that he is more hashkaficaly aligned with. How dare he advocate violence in Yerushalayim? Who made him G-d's spokesman? He is a rabble rouser who needs to find a job; go out and earn a living you shvantz and leave the people alone!
I had high hopes for Mayor Barkat when he was first elected, but capitulating to these violent thugs will only prove to embolden them. The beating of woman on busses and violent protests against parking garages will only prove to these fools that violence pays off if you continue to allow them to hold you hostage and give into their demands. Not all of the Jews in Yerushalayim and in Israel are frum, and seeing how these people behave why would they want to become frum?
If these people continue to act like this towards their fellow Jews we will be saying Nachem indefinitely.

And when things flare up in Jerusalem, the thugs in Bet Shemesh don't want to feel left out. We had to clean up Tzniuyus Grafitti this AM.
honestly you are my hero please advertize your blog we need you
was RAL jsut suggesting this, or actually advocating it?
the reason it remains in most siddurim is because the Rav was anti-changing tefilla just because metzios changes. For example, many people wanted the Rav to endorse changing kiddush levana since we can now touch the moon since there has been space travel. the rav said it doesnt matter, we dont change the wording of tefilla. So while many of the Rav's zionistic followers have thought to change nachem, many others have held fast to his opinion of not changing the text...
as to the violent protests... like i said before, fire with fire...
Lion, he actualy does it. I davened in a shul in Teaneck a few times on Tisha B'Av where they hand out amended versions of nachem. It felt weird, but I have been doing it the last few years. R' Aaron knows alot more than I will ever and if he feels it's the right thing to do, who am I to argue. I know there are many that will aregue the point.
I can't believe the Mayor gave in. I am really disappointed. This should worry every 'middle of the road' frummie, because you are next! Soon, when YOUR rights to do what YOU want to do are threatened, don't say I didn't warn you.
I am really scared.
(p.s. I moved to Ramat Bet Shemesh two years ago and am sick and tired of people giving in to the extremists. REALLY SICK OF IT.)
if the parking lot wasn't right off of Meah Shearim they probably would not have rioted the way they did, and will do tomorrow.
no mo rabbi will stick up ALL give in to the charidim we are done
What did you expect from Barkat? The poor guy is trying to run an orderly city. If he keeps the lot open there are riots. If he closes it, there aren't. Would we like these thungs to get a good whuppin'? Sure, but that won't happen. Even if the police jump them, they'll scatter and just come back later. Barkat is simply taking the path of least resistance for the sake of the perceived greater good.
As for changing davening, there's a good reason prayers won't change until the coming of Moshiach. One is because the situation is constantly fluid. Let's say chas v'shalom that Obama forces Israel to hand over the Old City to our enemies. Having amended the prayer do we then amend it back to the original?
And on a spiritual note, Yerushalayim isn't really rebuilt until the Temple graces it again.
As a side note, I recall hearing how many Conservatives only fast until midday on Tisha B'Av because Yerushalayim is rebuilt and the Har Habayais is in our hands. They never read Malachi, I guess.
