First we had Avi Shafran saying that we should look up to a man like Bernie Madoff, then we had this same organization not supporting the Markey bill, because as we have come to realize bricks and mortar are far more important than our children's well being and protection, and now we have the Agudah coming to the support of the Satmar Chaplain who helped arange a lavish Bar Mitzvah in the NY correctional facility for a convict's son, Shwekey included.
If this story were not such a huge chillul hashem it would be laughable, and infact had Mayor Bloomberg laughing at a press conference. It is obvious that these Orthodox criminals are only in jail because of blatant anti-Semitism, and as such when the opportunity arose for one of these model citizens that are being mechaper for our sins by sitting in jail (one who jumped bail a number of years ago) to make a bar mitzvah for his son, this chaplain arranged for a bar mitzvah party with 60 guests, and Shwekey.
Agudah shamelessly drafted a letter to the Mayor where they state that :“The reports in the media pillory Rabbi Glanz, in the most cynical and derogatory fashion imaginable, for his role in accommodating Jewish prisoners’ religious requirements and helping them participate, personally or vicariously, in milestone family celebrations,”
Are you kidding me? "Helping them participate, personally or vicariously, in milestone family celebrations,” The man is in jail on felony charges, if he wants to have some kind of a small celebration for a few people it's one thing but a band and a lavish dinner? That is abuse of the system of the worst order, a chillul hashem, will most likely harm other Orthodox inmates in the future. I would love to see a copy of the invitation that went out with the address. This is chutzpah of the worst order and this Rabbi deserves to lose his job. Agudah should be out there apologizing to the city for this Rabbi's blatant abuse of power and instead they are supporting this guy and calling it "nothing more than a lapse of judgment". What about all of the other accusations that people are claiming he did? Gambling in his office, inappropriate phone calls, mixers in his office. Were those also "lapses of judgement"?
This is a chillul hashem of the highest order and instead of stating that they unequivocally renounce the actions of the rabbi and distance themselves from him and his actions, they come to his defense. How can you defend such a chillul hashem? I will ask the question again HAVE YOU NO SHAME?
While I was typing this I figured out how this whole thing makes sense and the post can come full circle. Rabbi Shafran was hoping that this chaplain would stay in his position so that he could be a better help their friend Bernie!

Update:
YWN has a shameless editorial on this. These people are all sick.

Well put.
funny and sad all at the same time. The culture of corruption amongst the right wing elements of jusdaism is something that really is germane to the North East. I know down here, when someone goes to prison (i only know 1 jewish person who has been convicted and is currently serving his sentence, saying 'sitting' pisses me off) they are ostracized.
they dont get honored at the shul dinner....
great post then why do your friends in bergenfield chase after agudah including many of the yu ry? is not ynj a "torah umesorah" school even though not one yu rosh yeshiva is a member of there vadd of chinuch. do r blau, willg and shachter etc know anything about chinuch? or only arhon feldam does. fix your house first!!!!
Law, I agree that these people should be made to feel the pain in their community, if nothing else at least while they are still in prison. If when they get out they can show that have sincerely done Tshuva, maybe there is something to talk about with regards to letting them back into the fold.
Anon, I am not sure where you are going with that other than bashing the school. YNJ is, in fact a Torah Umesorah affiliated school as there are many benefits from being associated with them.
I know for a fact that on most issues they defer to YU roshie Yeshiva for their questions and, in fact, many of the roshei yeshiva have sent their kids there, I can't think of a better endorsement than that if that is the direction you want to go in. I am also not sure what my post has to do with YNJ, there was plenty of oportunity to get your bashing in a few weeks ago, but whatever floats your boat.
agreed
I have already said my piece. Dan L'Chaf Zechut is practically its own religion and it seems to excuse just about every issue except wearing short sleeves.
I don't think the Agudah should involve themselves in this battle. At the very least, they could wait to see what internal investigations reveal.
This all goes to the fact that there is a failure for some reason among RW orthodoxy/chareidim, perhaps due to their lack of significant exposure to the outside world, of how important perception is and how quickly information can spread. Perhaps if these people read the New York Post every now and then or looked at news on the internet rather than other things, they would realize how cynical and critical the public can be today, particularly torah observant Jews who profess to "answer to a higher authority." In addition, the focus on how torah observant Jews behave has also become a big media issue, whether in real life or on shows like Law & Order. This theme runs through all of the aspects of this issue (the position of the Agudah and the YWN editorial writer and the handling of the tax evasion issue by Rav Dovid Cohen himself and those who spoke to the Jewish Week about it (which in my view was a big, big mistake). The issue where the people in Kiryas Yoel clashed with the local utility raises the same issue. Anyone or any group in the public sphere needs to be extraordinarily careful of the potential impact of their words or deeds. They can impact the person himself or herself and in some cases our entire community.
they should insist that those ry be allowed to be on the vaad hachinuch of agudah's torah umesorah? dont you think. Why does ynj happly announce that they are a torah umesorah school because know your friends in bergenfiels will feel comfortable going there my point exactly running after agudah Are their any rebbiem there with a kinnited kippah? no
my pont is why associate with agudah at all? to get lakewood parsha sheets?
The editorials on the Agudah sites are pathetic. Talk about pidyon shevuyim? For crying out loud!
Between denying that spousal and child abuse exist, and that pedophilia is really, really, rare and this, it's clear we are living in an alternative universe from them.
To Anonymous who is complaining about Torah U'Mesorah, you should know that it is a toothless organization with no real mandate currently. Their va'ad hachinuch has absolutely no impact on RYNJ so who cares who is on it. What Torah U'Mesorah did before it got completely co-opted by the Agudah was help establish "day schools" (who uses that term anymore?) throughout the US in newly established communities, many of which were co-ed. That mission really isn't necessary anymore so right now they provide some educational support. The thing that they do that is really good and includes all walks of Judaism is Partners in Torah. In my view, the organization is a little bit of a waste of money and probably can be folded into some other Jewish organization.
they refuse co-ed dayschoools how come ynj is not a member bof the assoc of mod day schools from yu? i will answer my on question they love agudah where all there rebbim come from
You are a self hating Jew.
I arranged for an Upsheren for my Einikel when I was imprisoned in Guantanamo Bay.
I'm not sure what's worse - the YWN editorial or the comments. I cannot believe that "dan l'kaf zchut" was meant to excuse the poor behavior (b'lashon hamata) of Jews. I never understand it - don't people realize that when things come to light, it's a terrible chillul Hashem. Unbelievable!
"they refuse co-ed dayschoools"
RPY is co-ed and torah umesorah, although i guess they are grandfathered in
Law, while your community's respect for the law is commendable, a person who gets out of jail should absolutely NOT be ostracized, as long as he is not dangerous, EVEN IF HE IS GUILTY. The community should organize visits, rabbis, and letters to him and when he gets out he should be helped to get back on his feet. After all he is still our brother.
(This is unrelated to the current news item)
leaving aside the other allegations, what is so horrible about the bar mitzva?
Imagine something similar had been conducted by a chaplain of a different faith- would we be nearly as disgusted?
Is it true moral outrage we're expressing, or fear of a shanda ofthe goyim?
The Bar Mitzvah is a violaion of Prison rules. And even if it were not a violation of te rules, it is tasteless and is rubbing in the face of everyone else IN THE JAIL that Jews can get away with anything. The man is in prison for breaking the law and should be forces to serve his term and punishment like all other criminals.
Kisarita, it would be wrong for any faith to do something similar. There is a reason these people are in jail and extended vacation with three meals and a bed is not what it is.
But it's especially worse when a Jew does it. Look at the stereotypes: we're all rich, we "control" everything and then this guy goes and does something to prove it!
Honestly laws were not broken by Rabbi glanz if permission was granted by the prison authorities .And as someone who has a friend in prison i can tell you that the heads of the prison can even grant a furlough for a childs simcha. Also i find it peculiar at the least that the ny times on sun. could write a article abt R glanz and state that at most he was guilty of being to nice and how hes such a great guy but you Honestlyonly negativty odd!
honestly plese post again about the no one issue in teaneck are -tuition- how many jewish children are not being born here? Is this MO? Is this what the ravztl would want 15,000 grand per kid have we no shame???
