It's time for Avi Shafran to step down in shame. This guy has come out and publicly praised Bernard Madoff it's truly sick. In his recent article he suggested that although Madoff stole billions of dollars from people and ruined peoples lives, caused people to kill themselves and caused tzedakah organizations to close, given that he admitted his guilt in court we should admire him for "doing tshuvah". On the other hand he said that Sully, the pilot that landed the plane on the Hudson should not be honored because he was only doing his job and saving his own life at the same time. This is so sick and twisted I don't even know where to start.
Let me first say that I owe a measure of thanks to Shafran it was his sick idiocies which caused me to first start this blog. I was hoping that these opinions were his own and were in no way related to the opinions of The Agudah or Moetzes, but when I called the Agudah office I was told that he speaks for both Agudah and the Moetzes and these opinions reflect their views. He says that he is "still unmoved by the pilot, and, at least somewhat, inspired by the penitent". Are you kidding me? I contacted a noted scholar on this and he pointed out that these views are the antithesis of everything that we as Jews have stood for for the last 5000 years. He said that if his way of thinking is correct then we should be celebrating Eisav and Yishmael who according to the medrash did tshuvah on their death beds and not celebrate Moshe and Avraham who were both "doing their jobs". I e-mailed Shafran and he responded that "There is, in fact, a reason why there was a Rabbi Yishmael in the Talmud, precisely because Yishmael's teshuva was considered (at least by RY's parents!) to have been meaningful. I am not suggesting that Bernie become a respected name bestowed at brissim these days, only that we might gain from not joining the chorus of utter contempt that has been poured on the disgraced businessman". This guy stole Billions from tzedakah and Shafran thinks we shouldn't join the corus condemning him, but instead we should direct our wrath at Sully who saved 155 people?
This guy needs to stop talking in the name of other Jews. If the Agudah had any guts they would send him packing immediately. As one charedi freind of mine pointed out to me "He wakes up in the morning thinking about how to get media face time so he says radical stupidity". But he speaks for Agudah and as a result his views are the views of "mid stream" charedim. These views are not Jewish nor do they represent our values. I wonder if Shafran would be singing the same song if Agudah lost Millions to Madoff or if he was on the plane? I am sure then his tune would be different.
I urge you all to e-mail him and tell him you repudiate his remarks tell him that if he has nothing constructive to say to keep his mouth shut. Call Agudah tell them that he is an embarrassment to Judaism and that they should immediately issue a condemnation of these sick remarks and that he should be replaced NOW. shafran@agudathisrael.org

UPDATE:
Shafran has issued a mia culpa of sorts. here it is:

Okay, I know why he said this. Bernie is a jew, and the pilot, sully, is not; therefore, bernie is a much greater person in R'shafran's eyes, but he needs excuses for everyone to agree.
I was going to post something on this (by the way, it's time you linked me and visited, dude) but then I thought: Whoa! This is stupid, even for him.
Now, to "melamed zchus" him, read the beginning of the article again. I get the feeling he was given this topic and only wrote about it with great reluctance.
And I think his second point, about the pilot, is that the guy was doing his job just as he was trained to do. Rabbis give speeches and they don't expect huge accolades so why should a pilot get any extra credit for not losing it in a situation where everyone could have died if he made the slightest mistake? He was just doing his job.
I don't doub that wherever Rav Shafran is this Shabbos he'll be getting flack from people who read his column and saying "Yeah, I know, but there was a deadline and I had to come up with something!"
Can't wait for the good rabbi's upcoming blog...
it was just stupid to say such a stupid thing about Sully. Why praise the firemen in NY for the heroic efforts put forth during 9/11 - they were just doing their jobs.... why praise soldiers who valiantly fight a battle against odds - they are just doing their job... why praise yeshiva boys for learning - they are just doing their job...
you do a job well, especially if you go out on a limb and perform exemplary, you deserve praise.
about Madoff, he has a point. I don't think he should get a more lenient punishment because of it, but there is some "honor" or something in the fact that he admitted it himself. Perhaps he had hirhurei teshuva, or felt bad that he was hurting so many people. There is something to praise in the fact that he stepped forward and admitted his wrong. He probably could have kept it going for a lot longer and nobody would have known... but he admitted it all.
Dunno, my assumption is that he's defending Bernie as a proactive move once they start attacking Agudah for supporting Leib Pinter.
The more I think about it, the more it stinks.
The only reason Madoff could do teshuvah is because he stole millions in the first place. So great, he did teshuvah. But that is only a reminder of his crimes.
As for the pilot, the reason he's a hero isn't only because he saved all those lives. It's because he himself, like the firefights in 9/11, felt that he was just doing his job. The humilty, along with the incredible nature of his actions, is what makes him a hero.
Garnel, you are now linked and although I do regularly visit your site I will try to make my presence more know. Here is the entire text of Shafran's e-mail to me:
Thank you for your feedback. Please, though, read the piece again. I did not say that we should have "more admiration" for Mr. Madoff than Mr. Sullenberger, only that I am unmoved by the latter's heroism (at least what people laud him for -- his skill) and perceive the beginning of repentance in the former's words and the fact that he didn't flee his punishment.
There is, in fact, a reason why there was a Rabbi Yishmael in the Talmud, precisely because Yishmael's teshuva was considered (at least by RY's parents!) to have been meaningful. I am not suggesting that Bernie become a respected name bestowed at brissim these days, only that we might gain from not joining the chorus of utter contempt that has been poured on the disgraced businessman.
You are welcome, of course, to disagree. But the above is what I meant and, I believe, wrote.
He is sick. The only reason Madoff admitted what he did was to keep his family out of jail. Thank G-d there has been some backlash in the charedi community over it yet not nearly enough.

Wow, I gotta say I am impressed. I was just in the middle of a post about Rabis who say dumb things and don't think there is anything wrong with it (Shafran, R' Dovid Cohen, R' Schorr), but now I may, MAY, hold off on it for now. Is this a first?
I actually emailed R Shafran (I do so quite often) and got a very nice response from him prior to the "retraction". In general, he's very open to discussion.
Do a google search for "Jewthink". It's an amazing book he wrote when he was in 18 yrs old. It's great for kiruv.
